Events

The West Vancouver Chamber is committed to creating gatherings that are informative, relevant, and fun. Whether it is business driven, social, or governance all our events focus on the community and business of West Vancouver and our sister community on Bowen Island.

Signature events are the Leader to Leader series with business leaders and community guests, updates from MP Patrick Weiler and MLAs Karin Kirkpatrick and Jordan Sturdy, the long run Business After Business networking socials, social events such as the Holiday Gathering supported by British Pacific Properties, plus the Business Excellence Awards.

The power of a member-driven organization is that many of the best ideas come from members who recognize an opportunity to connect and share information or ideas. If you have a suggestion, please contact us at info@westvanchamber.com.

PURPOSE + PROFITS: How they work together to drive your brand reputation and your success

Breakfast Meeting and Panel Discussion

Tuesday, June 5, 2018
7:00 am to 9:00 am

Hollyburn Country Club, Creekside Room
950 Cross Creek Road, West Vancouver

For years corporate, social, and environmental responsibility has been on the minds of business leaders. How to make a difference and continue to build their business? What is the right balance? What are the areas of need in the community? How can it work for my small business?
Now the conversation has shifted to “purpose” with the goal of understanding how to make authentic connections between a cause and your company or business.

“Purpose is the new currency; it’s one of the greatest untapped forces for the for-profit world.
Without purpose your business model is incomplete.”
Holly Branson, Virgin Group

Join us for an insightful and inspiring discussion about how businesses of all sizes are adding purpose as a key element to their business proposition and how it has impacted their communities.

Listen to our panel of business leaders who will share their experiences in how their organizations have become more vital, interesting, relevant, and connected through the support of various community initiatives and environment, social, or community causes. The discussion will include the importance of purpose to driving business success, build reputation and employee engagement.

PANELISTS:

Benjamin Ernst, Earnest Ice Cream Founder/operator.

Earnest Ice Cream is one of the  first ice cream shops to pack pints in returnable and reusable glass jars. Reuse is a part of their goal of being a zero waste company. Their jars can be found in independent shops and restaurants around Vancouver. Working in small batches allows them the flexibility to experiment with fresh, foraged ingredients like fresh spruce bud and elder-flower, locally sourced.

Doug Grisdale, Owner, Mangia E Bevi Ristorante and La Sorella Di Mangia Family Restaurant, West Vancouver.

It’s a family affair at West Vancouver’s authentic neighborhood Italian restaurant, Mangia E Bevi Ristorante (translation: Eat and Drink) The Restaurant opened its doors in April 2007. Doug Grisdale grew up just 4 blocks from the restaurant and got his passion for entertaining guests from his mom, who always welcomed everyone who knocked at the door. When the opportunity came to join Antonio (his brother-in-law) in opening an Italian restaurant, he jumped at the chance. His belief that every customer should be treated like family is evident through his passion to ensure that all our clients feel at home.

Being a part of the community they call home is equally important. Having been touched by cancer in many ways, Doug and co-owners Antonio Sauro and Rob Parrott  wanted to use Mangia E Bevi to support the fight against cancer. The campaign created is called BACIO, which stands for “Because A Cure Is Obtainable”. (It also means “kiss” in Italian), To date, they  have raised over $300,000 to battle cancer at Lions Gate Hospital, BC Children’s Hospital and BC Cancer Agency.

Doug will lead our panel and share his personal story of philanthropy.

David Parker, Founding Partner, Changequity Investments.

David has a strong sustainability background with many years experience in the Mining industry. David served as Vice President, Sustainability at Teck Resources Ltd., with responsibility for negotiating multi-party agreements, project development, environmental assessment and permitting. He led the development and launch of Teck’s sustainability strategy and provided management oversight and strategic direction to advance projects across the company. Under his leadership, Teck was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Rick Sielski, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Risk, Vancity.

As Senior Vice President of Enterprise Risk, Rick Sielski ensures the credit union has a deep understanding of risk that balances growth and impact with regulatory requirements. With oversight of the credit, enterprise intelligence and data, and enterprise risk management functions, his team builds the organization’s capacity to generate insights and make timely, informed decisions that enable the delivery of a differentiated member experience

The morning starts with Adine Mees, CEO, West Vancouver Foundation presenting the 2017 Vital Signs Report which incorporates demographics, statistics, studies and community dialogue to identify concerns and support actions on issues that are critical to the quality of life on the North Shore. Prior to joining the WV Foundation, Adine was CEO of Canadian Business for Social Responsibility.

Introducing Adine will be Geoff Croll, President at British Pacific Properties Ltd., who will share British Pacific Properties’ involvement in our community and their support of the Vital Signs research.

Our panel of business leaders will share their experiences in how their organizations have become more vital, interesting, relevant, and connected through the support of various community initiatives and environment, social, or community causes. The discussion will include the importance of purpose to driving business success, build reputation and employee engagement.

A morning to start you thinking about how you can harness your passion for your business and the community.
